The night started off as usual with DJ Tokens b.k.a. DJ Checkwun one the 1’s and 2’s. With half the capacity sold before the show even started, the crowd was definitely live the whole night. Blacksmith opened the show followed by E Major. Something “xtraFINESSEtrial” came next, with Resn and Finesse. Keep your eyes on the dude, Finesse! A finalist in the last “Show Me What You Got” and already signed up for the next one, he is only 19 years old and doing it big. With half the supporting acts done, it was time for the heavy hitters. The Bash Brotherz, Big Ox and Bullet Brak, definitely had the crowd from the beginning of their set to the end. For the People was next up. What else can I say about them except that they always do it big! Shout out to Ali! With the Beatnuts on deck, it was Profitt Productions time to shine, as Profitt fell back from his lead role to let his squad get their hip-hop on. After a brief intermission, enter JuJu and Psycho Les, the Beatnuts! You know they did the damn thing! They had something for the ladies… something for the fellas… and everybody’s favorite “Watch Out Now”. Overall the “show was cool, I had a good time”, Les said. Les continued, “I had fun. Anytime I step on stage, I try to have fun”. JuJu quickly adds, “I appreciate all my fans coming out and I love the energy of the crowd. B-more is the place to be.”
Be on the look out for “The UFO Files” dropping September 30th and “Planet of the Crates” coming spring/summer 2009.

E Major releases the second video off of his critically acclaimed album "Majority Rules." The song, produced by Bmore Original's DJ Excel, is called "We Got It Going On" and also features Mad'az Godfree talking trash and hyping the song up. The video, which is co-directed by Larry Panzer and E Major, and the song, both show a less polished side of E Major; a grimier, more in your face image to contrast his first single, the girl crazy "Nuthin' NIce." E Major's "Majority Rules" is available now at www.undersoundmusic.net. A third music video is expected in September.

Happy Life Day, everyone! The Star Wars Holiday Special is one of the most perversely misbegotten disasters in television history. Broadcast during yuletide in 1978 at the height of Force mania, Holiday Special was proof that virtually anything with the words "star" and "wars" in the title could make it onto the air. George Lucas was so mortified by the final product that he later he said he'd love to take a hammer to every copy; Carrie Fisher claimed it didn't even exist. That would be tough, however, since TSWHS is one of the most bootlegged films of all time. It's hard not to see why! Thrill, as Chewbacca's hideous family members (with names like Itchy and Lumpy) communicate through a series of monosyllabic grunts -- for minutes as a time! Cringe, as Chewy watches television! Recoil, as the Jefferson Starship rocks out with a Life Day carol! Befuddle, as Art Carney, Bea Arthur, and Diahann Carroll turn in cameos! The curious may be inclined to check this one out for the sake of so-bad-it's-good chuckles, but this movie is deadly. See for yourself. We dare you.

A Tuesday night show (7/29) isn't something you'd expect to see a majority of Baltimore's underground Hip Hop artists at, especially considering that most of the artists from Baltimore's burgeoning scene have 9 to 5's. But last night's Hieroglyphics show proved different. As a promotion for the newly opened Bedrock, Steezpromo did a huge guest-list, making it only $2 for most everyone that came in the door.

The first thing that was noticeable upon arrival to Bedrock was how great the turnout was for a muggy Tuesday night on the west side. I had just been to Rock the Bells over the weekend and I saw many of my MC friends and the hard core Hip Hop heads there, so my expectation was not to see the same people out late, two days after the all day rap extravaganza. I was pleasantly surprised however to see, Ab Rock, Harvey Dent, Tislam, Proton, DJ Face and U'll Neva Know among others out to see CA's legendary Hip Hop crew.

Overall, the crowd was hype, diverse and interested, and the groups that performed seemed to be enjoying themselves while putting on great performances. The venue is clean, has good sound and is a perfect alternative for the Baltimore Hip Hop scene to spread out past the JKX corridor. As more shows start to jump off at Bedrock I expect to see more and more successful events, whether they're on a weekend or a random Tuesday night.

Thursday was definitely a backpacker’s night out! The show was kicked off with DJ Remedy holding it down and followed up by Brake Fast Records rocking out. As is customary at a “hip-hop” show, there has to be some kind of a battle. A few cats stepped up to the plate only to run head on with A-Class, who of course settled any questions of who was the best battler in the building. Roc Raida, fresh off of Starscape, took over on the wheels and murdered it! Enter Q-Bert, enter crowd explosion! The crowd was plenty jacked thanks to our sponsor, Sparks. Afterward (outside the Ottobar) Roc Raida commented on the show, “The show was dope, perfect line-up. Just proud to be apart of Baltimore hip-hop now.”
I for one had a great time. Did you? Let us know. Shout out to the Sparks girls, Christina and Alex!

“It was great to be back in B-more...” the legendary Guru said after walking off the stage. The show on Saturday was intense! Guru continued, “… The real hip-hop heads came out to represent, and the energy was off the hook.” We had a great local line-up with Salim and the Music Lovers, Planet SB, For the People Entertainment, and Minlus and McCracken. When K-Born and Highpower hit the stage, the crowd continued to rock out in anticipation of the main event. Solar said, “This is the third time in B-more and the best so far.” DJ Doo Wop and Solar hit the stage and it was time for Guru. Solar added, “And I feel that the hip-hop scene in Baltimore has a future and 7 Grand supports that future.”
I’ve seen a lot of hip-hop shows, and this turned out to be a must see that I hope you didn’t miss! Shout out to DJ Remedy for holding down the 1’s and 2’s all night long!

The legendary Starscape Festival returns for its 10th year, to bring you a day and night of music and entertainment under the stars, culminating in the sunrise over the Chesapeake Bay. This year's event has five areas of music: The Main Stage features live bands, a crushing sound system, and top-notch visual production. The Buzz Area will be under a 10,000 sq ft tent, focuses on electronic dance music and features an audiovisual assault on the senses. The Steez Promo Drum n Bass area takes place under a 6,000 sq ft tent, and features the worlds best drum n bass talent and a bass heavy sound system sure to make your insides shake. There will be two beach stages this year; one stage will focus on live music and feature national, regional, and local jamtronica and reggae bands, the other stage will be hosted by Sonic Soul, Essential Breaks, and The Remix Renegades and will feature a wide array of dance music from a number of regional and local artists. The festival will also feature a 40 ft live graffiti wall, a full art gallery featuring local and regional artists, and vendors from around the mid-Atlantic region.

Yup. We are bringing back the "SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT" MC Battle!

For those that witnessed, participated, or heard about the first one, you already know.

If you don't know we had a packed house every night (including lots of "important" people), great talent, and alot of networking. In a word - successful.

So if you are interested in entering the 2nd edition of "SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT" you need to read up on these details. AND YOU BETTER READ THOROUGHLY SO YOU DON'T GET DQ'D!!!

This NOT a traditional head to head rap battle. This is a chance for you to showcase your material.

There will be 2 rounds and a final. All will be held at Fletcher's.

Round 1 will be March 4, round 2 March 5, and the finals on March 11. There will be approx. 16 acts on the first two rounds. Three winners from the first two rounds will be asked to come back and compete in the finals. If you have a preference on which day you would like to perform let me know and i will try my best to make it happen. I CAN'T MAKE ANY PROMISES THOUGH! Also we only have room for 32 acts. Unfortunatly not everyone that wants to compete will be able to.

Each act will get a 8 minute set. It is very important to not go over 8 min. We will have 16 acts each night so at 8 minutes YOUR MUSIC WILL STOP! You might want to make your set around 7 minutes to be safe. Should you place and advance to the finals you get a 20 minute set on the night of the final. Same deal. DO NOT GO OVER YOUR TIME LIMIT. Can't stress that enough.

You must arrive at Fletcher's on the day of your event NO LATER THAN 8 PM. We will draw names out of hat to determine the line up for the night...literally. That's the only way to make it fair. IF YOU SHOW UP LATE YOU WILL NOT COMPETE AND YOU WILL NOT BE REFUNDED YOUR ENTRY FEE. IF WE CALL YOUR NAME AND YOU DON'T RESPOND YOU WILL NOT COMPETE AND YOU WILL NOT BE REFUNDED YOUR ENTRY FEE.

There is a $40 entry fee. This gets you 20 tickets and a reserved slot in the battle. Do what you want with the tickets. We would like to see you sell them and get your $40 back, but it is up to you. Give them away if you want. BUT YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO DRAW YOUR 20 PEOPLE! Now I can't be running all over the state to deliver tickets to 32 different artists. So it is up to you to come meet Frank or myself. We are out and about the Baltimore area just about every night. If you can't meet up with us let us know ASAP and we will try to make arrangements. THE SOONER THE BETTER!

You will be judged by a panel of judges that will not be announced till the day of the event. They will be legit. Trust. You will be judged on stage prescence, crowd response, professionalism (this means how you handle business from the time you sign up to the end of the event...BE ON TIME...yeah I'm judging you on this one!), and overall performance.

What do you win?? One winner will go home with $500 CASH...AND open up for SLICK RICK on April 9 at Club 5 in Washington DC...AND open up for SLICK RICK again on April 11 at The Ottobar in Baltimore. WOW! Now you should know that even though only one winner takes the whole prize all will be observed by lots of people that can help advance your name and music. BELIEVE ME.

Doom, Doombot or Design?

Underground rapper MF Doom is getting a lot of attention lately but it isn’t because of his clever wordplay.

Fans in Atlanta posted complaints on Internet message boards claiming the masked entertainer, who cultivates his anonymity and mystique, is sending imposters to perform at his concerts – and fans aren’t amused.

The most recent report involves an MF Doom show at Atlanta’s MJQ Concourse December 13th. Concertgoers claim a gladiator-masked performer took the stage around 1:30 a.m. and lip-synced Doom’s rhymes during an abbreviated set.

One Atlanta fan didn’t mince words.

"Dude came out with the worst stage presence you’d ever seen," Jeff Hoffman told Creativeloafing.com. "He didn’t say a single word to address the crowd, or a single word that wasn’t on his albums. The couple times I saw him move his hand away from the mask, you could tell that he might as well have been singing Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller.’ I can’t explain my levels of dissatisfaction and anger."

The Web site reported that Atlanta promoter Randy Castello was inundated with e-mails from MJQ attendees demanding refunds for their $30 tickets. An MJQ bouncer told Creative Loafing the crowd was "livid" and wrote graffiti all over the venue’s restroom expressing their anger.

But Hoffman’s complaint is déjà vu in regard to Doom. The rapper was also accused of sending a stand-in – a much thinner and less-talented one – to perform at The Independent in San Francisco last August.

Doom fan Dan Schwab, who flew to S.F. from Oregon for the show, told the Village Voice that the masked performer on The Independent stage wasn’t the real Doom and he had proof.

"I went up to the sound guy about two songs deep and said, ‘No one can hear Doom’s mic.’ He looked at me and said straight-up, ‘I know. His mic’s not on, and that’s not MF Doom,’" Schwab told the Voice.

At the time, a representative for MF Doom told Pollstar the rapper "wasn’t feeling good" and indeed lip-synced, but it was the Man in the Mask.

The rapper (aka Daniel Dumile) bases his persona on the Marvel Comics supervillain Dr. Doom who uses "Doombots" as decoys, so is this just life imitating art or a clever publicity campaign to promote his next album reportedly entitled Doompostor? There’s no clear answer.

However, Jason Swartz of Alliance Talent Int’l, one of Doom’s agents, told the Voice in September that the uproar surrounding his client isn’t warranted.

"There’s rumors about this artist all the time," Swartz said. "The guy wears a mask. He’s an elusive character. He never does merch, he never signs autographs, he never does an encore. That’s just his style.

"He’s a comic-book character of a rapper. In a world where hip-hop has gotten so boring, it’s nice that he has a style that he sticks to that’s not boring."

Pollstar’s attempt to reach Swartz was unsuccessful at press time.
